The North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council The Massachusetts economy is comprised of many, diverse regional economies. Accordingly, economic development services and marketing programs are tailored to the regions and are increasingly being delivered regionally. In this region, the North Central Massachusetts Development Corporation (NCMDC) was chartered in 1987 to further the economic development of North Central Massachusetts. NCMDC has, since inception, chosen to focus program efforts on lending and financing assistance to support economic development and has been successful in becoming the major alternative lending source in the region. As neighboring regions exercise stronger voices and roles in planning and coordinating their own unique economic development futures, the NCMDC recognizes the need to adopt the trend and even surpass those other regions to remain competitive and represent our local and regional economy pro-actively. Therefore, NCMDC has embarked on a course to expand beyond financing to develop and implement a multi-faceted regional economic development strategy and enhance economic development services while expanding our lending capacity to accommodate our unique industry mix. In 2006, the NCMDC formed a partnership with Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State College to create the North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council. The Council’s mission is to plan and implement programs to create jobs and increase economic opportunity in the region. The Council is composed of representatives from the entire 26-community region. It is advisory in function and involves business and community leaders, five Chambers of Commerce, regional planning and development organizations, and state and municipal elected officials among others totaling 122 members in 2008. The North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council is staff supported by the professionals of the NCMDC. On behalf of the Council, the North Central Massachusetts Development Corporation will take a lead role in conducting a study of current economic and demographic conditions and trends, contracting with expert consultants in the field to analyze the data and draft a regional strategy plan, invite and incorporate input from the Council and implement key elements of the plan.
